Gin Yee seeks school board seat
Dartmouth, NS - Gin Yee is running for a seat on the Halifax Regional School Board, District 6, Dartmouth Centre / Albro Lake - Harbourview.
He will fight for sustained supplementary funding, continue the work to make math and literacy a priority, and improve communication with constituents.
Supplementary funding pays for such programs as enhanced music courses, physical education and art classes.
But in spring 2004, Halifax Regional Municipality Council threatened to reduce supplementary funding because the Department of Education forced Halifax to shoulder an unfair burden of new education costs in the rest of Nova Scotia.
"I will make sure continued supplementary funding helps pay for reduced class sizes, enhanced music, physical education classes, French and arts programs. I will ensure that tax dollars collected in Dartmouth will remain in Dartmouth for our children's education," Gin says.
"Halifax Regional School Board and the Halifax Regional Municipality need to work together to make the province pay its fair share of education funding and sustain supplementary funding."
Reducing class sizes, more classroom time, and making sure students get textbooks are some of the things to be done to make math and literacy a priority in schools.
Gin is committed to improving communications with constituents by holding regular town hall meetings, using such multimedia tools as his Web site www.ginyee.ca and providing a regular newsletter.
