Gary O’Hara is the new chair of the Halifax Regional School Board.
Mr. O’Hara, who represents District 7: Clayton Park West – Fairview
– Clayton Park – Rockingham – Wentworth, was appointed by the
Governor in Council today in accordance with Section 55 (5) of the
Education Act.
“I am very optimistic that we will put aside our past problems and
set a course for the future.” said Mr. O’Hara. “I believe in my
fellow board members and trust they will give me their full
support.”
Mr. O’Hara’s appointment has the endorsement of the two members who
stood for chair last week.
“Gary is a solid choice because he’s a great listener and someone
who has a long history as a supporter and advocate for the education
system,” said vice-chair Debra Barlow. “I’m looking forward to
working with him.”
Gin Yee added, “I hope the very best for Gary as Chair. I am looking
forward to working with him to provide better opportunities for the
students in the Halifax Regional School Board.”
Mr. O’Hara will serve as the chair until the board holds an internal
election in October. Debra Barlow will remain as vice-chair.
The Halifax Regional School Board serves approximately 55,000
students in 138 schools through the Halifax Regional Municipality.
