Speech to Board Members

Thank you Madam Chair.

Fellow board members, let me begin by thanking those of you that have supported me and especially to the African Nova Scotian Board Member who nominated me for the role of Chair. I am deeply honored by your support.

We as a board have dealt with a variety of issues including; conflict of interest, bankruptcy, seating arrangements and absenteeism.

Dealing with these non-educational issues in a putative manner has divided us and we are not focusing our energy where it is needed, in Education. If you elect me as Chair, I will not lead in an arbitrary manner, but try to lead by consensus, compassion, and empathy. I honestly hope that trying to lead in this style will bring us back to a path where the Halifax Regional School Board can once again speak as one strong voice for the students of Halifax.

"Treat others as you would like to be treated" is a principle I have tried to follow in my life and, in addition to a new leadership style, is a value that I’m sincerely hoping to bring to the Office of the Chair of the Halifax Regional School Board.

Thank you Madam Chair.
